Co. Louth VEC have recently secured PEACE III funding from the Co. Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership to deliver a major project under Priority 1 (Reconciling Communities), Activity 1: Combating Sectarianism and Racism. The Co. Louth VEC led project will be aimed at combating sectarianism and racism on a cross border basis. It is due to get underway in October / November 2009 and will run to the end of 2010. The primary focus of this cross border project will be to build the capacity of emerging and existing groups to deal with sectarianism and racism. The project will work towards supporting such groups address racism and sectarianism affecting their communities. Co. Louth VEC has teamed up with two other Co. Louth based organisations to deliver this project; the North South Exchange Consortium based at DKIT and Coexist based in Dundalk town centre. The tri-partnership will also work with other local groups over the duration of the project. The project will involve the delivery of training and mentoring programmes to emerging and existing minority groups within which sectarianism and racism could present challenges to both the group's development, and that of their communities. It is expected that such training and mentoring programmes will strengthen the capacity of these groups to establish future sustainable peace building approaches in their communities, as well as enabling them to develop an understanding that racism and sectarianism are not two separate issues. The project is supported by the European Union's Peace III Programme as awarded by Louth Peace and Reconciliation Partnership. Further information on this new and innovative project can be obtained by contacting the Adult Education Officer in Co. Louth VEC. |
