The School Transport Scheme was established in 1967 and is administered by Bus Éireann as agent for the Department of Education & Science.

Meetings are arranged annually with Bus Éireann representatives and school Principals to discuss the school calendar and any school transport requirements/problems they may have. In addition, parents can make representations direct to the Transport Liaison Officer.

To be eligible under the post primary school transport scheme a pupil must:

  • Be enrolled for an approved course in a recognised post primary school.
  • Be not less than 12 years of age on or before 1st January of the school year in which the pupil enters second level education.
  • Have completed sixth class in a national school or its equivalent.
  • Live 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) or more from his/her appropriate post primary education centre.

ELIGIBLE POST PRIMARY €300
CONCESSIONARY POST PRIMARY €300
MAXIMUM FAMILY CHARGE €650

 

Eligible Post Primary pupils from families with medical cards will continue to be exempt from charges.

Transport application forms are available from Post Primary Schools or from the VEC Administrative Centres.
